U.S. Government Renews its Warning for U.S. Citizens Traveling to China

This Thursday, the U.S. Government renewed its travel advisory regarding travels to China. This warning is the result of what the U.S. Government considers as the arbitrary enforcement of local laws and the detention of several U.S. and Canadian citizens without cause.

While the advisory does not prompt the halt of all travels to China, it encourages American citizens to exercise extra caution when visiting China. The statement also indicated that dual U.S.-Chinese citizens or Americans of Chinese heritage are especially vulnerable to additional scrutiny by local authorities.

In past months, Chinese authorities, not recognizing the dual citizenship, have prohibited U.S. citizens from returning home by using “exit bans,”said the U.S. State Department. In most cases, travelers become aware of the ban when attempting to board their return flight to the U.S and were detained without access to U.S. Consular services.

If you travel to China:

  • Enter China on your U.S. passport with a valid Chinese visa. Always keep both documents with you.
  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive Alerts and make it easier for consular services to locate you.
  • Have all documents regarding your travel itinerary and the reason of your trip readily available.
  • If you are arrested, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy.
  • Make sure family and friends know your travel plans and ask them to notify the U.S. Embassy if they don’t hear from you after a certain amount of time or upon your scheduled return date.
