Assist Alert: Storm Eleanor to Hit Ireland and the UK Tonight Through January 3.

Storm Eleanor is expected to bring wind gusts of up to 80 mph (130 kph) to Ireland and the UK late January 2nd through January 3rd. The wind gusts will be accompanied by heavy rains which may result in flooding. The affected areas include the Island of Ireland, Western UK, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Northern and Central England. Northern France will also be affected in the morning on January 3rd.

The storm is likely to cause significant transport disruptions across the forecast areas. Fallen trees, debris and flooding could cause issues on the roads while airports will see numerous cancellations, diversions and delays. Airports that will be affected are: Dublin (DUB), Cork (ORK), Shannon (SNN), Birmingham (BHX), Liverpool (LPL), Manchester (MAN), and the London airports (London City, LCY – Heathrow, LHR – Gatwick, LGW).

Strong winds are expected to carry over all the way to the Alps and could results in dangerous avalanches. This region was already affected by the very recent and deadly Storm Carmen whose strongest winds of up to 110 mph (180 kph) just hit the Alps and the French Island of Corsica.

If you are planning on traveling by car, postpone travel and stay indoors until the storm has passed and local authorities have declared roads to be safe again.

If you travel by air, call your travel agent and/or airline carrier to confirm the status of your flight. Do not leave for the airport until your flight is confirmed. Clearing air travel backlog may take a few days.

If you are in the Alps, make sure you stay in authorized areas and avoid off-piste and backcountry skiing.
