SITUATION

Thousands of firefighters in the State of California have been fighting a total of 17 rapidly spreading wildfires in Northern California’s wine country and in the Los Angeles area. On Tuesday evening, more than 94,000 acres had turned into ashes across the state, leaving more than a million households without power and forcing 200,000+ people to evacuate their homes. According to authorities, only 15% of the fires were able to be contained.

A total of 43 counties, representing a population of 4.5 million, are under a red-flag warning or extreme red-flag warning as winds up to 80 mph are expected in the southern part of the state over the next 48 hours.

While the Los Angeles and San Francisco airports are not reporting any delays, the fires have reached residential areas and forced authorities to close sections of major highways including the 405 freeway in Los Angeles.

ADVICE

If you are traveling in California, stay informed about the areas affected by the fires and change your itinerary accordingly.

Plan for more time to get to your destination as road traffic is severely impacted. If traveling by train, expect delays as rail service is running at a slower pace for safety reasons.

Listen carefully to local alerts and announcements and follow evacuation orders.
