Airlines have already canceled over 1200 flights in anticipation of Winter Storm Stella that is slated to hit the Northeast United States on Monday night through Tuesday afternoon. More cancellations are likely to occur and are expected to impact travel until Wednesday. The worst weather-related problems are expected at airports in New York, Philadelphia, Washington, Boston, and Baltimore. Many airlines in the affected areas are allowing passengers to make one-time changes to their flights without any fee.

If you are planning on flying in or out of the Northeast United States this week, be sure to check with the airline on the status of your flight before leaving for the airport. Also, make sure that your contact information is up-to-date, so that you can be notified of any schedule changes.

Below are some winter storm/blizzard safety tips:

Vehicle preparation before the storm (do not travel unless absolutely necessary)
• Dress warmly
• Fill your gas tank
• Let a friend or relative know your predicted arrival time
• Keep your cell phone charged and bring extra charging equipment
• Pack extra food and water
• Pack extra gasoline for emergency fuel

If you are stranded in a vehicle
• Stay inside your vehicle
• Run your vehicle for ten minutes every hour
• Make sure the exhaust pipe is clear and not blocked by snow or other debris
• Crack the windows to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning
• Tie a colored cloth to your antenna or door
• Raise the hood of your car after the snow stops falling
• Exercise and move around to keep warm and increase blood flow
